HA:TFELT vs JYP: The Album Wars
As we should all know my now, formerly known as Wonder Girls' Yenny/Yeeun has took the ever-so-common route for Wonder Girls members and started working on her own individual solo life. As a result, she released an mini-album entitled Me? and also started to shine her producer/composer-like qualities, the album being basically "her own" and not falling back on anyone for tracks however, only Park Jin Young for support. As we all should also know by now, Park Jin Young was flabbergasted at her decision to put so many dark songs in the album prior to the release and told her she should at least add a few happier songs however, she pushed against the force of JYP and revealed a 11 paged letter focusing solely on why she should have released the album, JYP being exasperated at her choice and just giving her the go.
There's been lots of huffling and buffling about this case from media outlets, numerous people taking sides and for the most part, international fans siding with Yeeun while Korean fans took the side of Park Jin Young however, I'm going to show both sides of the story and take into account my opinion of who is right or wrong instead of just completely downing Jin Young or Yeeun.
Yeeun's side |
The power of individuality is a beautiful thing... this probably being one of the main reasons why international fans are taking the side of Yeeun without much thought in the process. HA:TFELT expressed herself through her own composing conveying a range of emotions that the majority of Korean idols don't even show and I applaud her standing up to the force telling her to go against Park Jin Young. She did it more for herself rather than for the public, I suppose, and though this album didn't top the charts or give her a certified all-kill, it certainly did give her the feeling of knowing she has achieved something: expressing herself. Maybe it wasn't her goal to sell but instead was to not be the bubblegum bitch that Wonder Girls' image forced her to be. She wanted to be more mature, more serious and more well, herself, and that shouldn't be something to get angry at.
Park Jin Young's side |
Regardless, I understand Park Jin Young's side and everyone defending him. I mean, he took her in and he wound her up as well as the other Wonder Girls and JYP Entertainment entertainers to be artist material. To break out of their shell. To be completely and utterly amazing. Yet now that she's getting some praise for composing on her own, she's not even going to take baby steps but is just going to completely let go of her guardian's hand and walk on her own two feet? Those songs displaying her feelings could have been saved for later when she was more of an established solo artist. Park Jin Young was looking out for her and trying to establish her in the solo career world before pulling the amount of tricks she did. With an artist no matter what, they need to first establish themselves before going out and about and doing the crazy things they want to do in order to succeed and stay successful. Park Jin Young was acting rationally--like a father to his children--yet she abandoned him as quickly as he picked her up.
The verdict |
I'm not completely pressed about this case but after thinking thoroughly about this, I really do feel as if there should have been a split between the two. Of course, self-expression is amazing however, she should have expressed herself either after or with better tunes that were more pleasing to the public tastes. It should have been an album that was helped on by Park Jin Young who rose them, Wonder Girls, to the top with his own composed songs yet still have her as a writer, as well, because she should have taken baby steps. All-in-all, the album is tolerable--not exactly my cup of tea after listening to most of the songs--and after hearing that they don't even talk anymore because of this dispute is truly confusing me. I felt that putting this article out was needed to show my opinion in the case through analysis.

JYP Debuting New Groups... Is it Worth It?
So as you all should know, JYP Entertainment, better-wise known as Sinking Ship Danger Zone Entertainment has recently released that they will be debuting three groups next year, one group being a 6 member girl group and the other two groups being male groups, one of the groups apparently containing the much loved and full of potential by themselves sub-unit, JJ Project. After the clear disbandment of Wonder Girls, their past pride and joy with Sohee's quick get away from the group and Suzy of Miss A clearly being one of the only reasons JYP is still afloat (JYP released the obvious that Suzy increased JYP's sales by 30%), JYP is now looking for other ways to pick up the loot and get back their position in the Big 3.
But is it worth it?
In my opinion, it's surely worth a try. But in the end, I don't think much will happen if they're trying to regain their position back in the big three. Sure, they could or could not get a considerable amount of popularity in their new groups if comparing with the popularity of current rookie groups but it probably won't be enough. With that kind of management, I doubt they'll be able to replace their old pride and joys Wonder Girls and 2PM in which they threw away so quickly.
EXO rose up with random sasaeng controversies, their album containing Growl and of course, the power of SM Entertainment.
WINNER rose up with their song, the huge promotion and of course, the power of YG Entertainment.
But what will JYP's three new groups have?
Oh right... an unstable and inconstant company to back them up.
One that can't even work with their newest groups and artists, 15&, Baek Ah Yeon and JJ Project even though they had huge potential (especially 15&, with Park Jimin in it, winner of the popular show, K-Pop Star).
One that couldn't even keep control of their previous national girl group, Wonder Girls, before it got thrown away.
One that can't even promote Miss A even though one of their members is one of the most popular females in Korea right now.
Let's see how this turns out.
What do you think of JYP's groups? Love it or hate it?

Is the Big 3 even the Big 3 anymore?
Before 2012, if any knowledgeable K-Pop fan were to be asked by someone new to the Korean music phenomenon what the Big 3 was, without hesitation, the answer would be SM, YG and JYP. It was basically common knowledge that these three companies not only sit at the top of the K-Pop "food chain" with their cash in one hand and their
However, the times have changed. Although the sophomoric fangirls assuredly still remain, the top of the K-Pop "food chain" seems to have shrunk in size in which no longer has enough room for three companies. This abatement now leads to a bigger question: Is the Big 3 even the Big 3 anymore?
My answer to the above question? Most definitely not. While SM and YG have been prospering abundantly during 2012, JYP has been on a constant decline. And as a result of the devastating implications that have been taking a toll on the company, JYP has started to lose it's overall strength in the Big 3. Along with their drop in revenue, a drop in artists' overall stability is also notable and it seems as if the company truly no longer know what aiming for at certain points in time (for example, JYP's liquidation of their American company). Because of this and the already stated factor that the remaining two companies of the previous trio, SM and YG, have been contrarily experiencing great prosperity, it has basically inevitable that the latter have no longer really regarded JYP as a worthy enough opponent or threat anymore and that the previous head-to-head-to-head competition has to condensed to a silent yet malicious two participant duel.
With revenues still exceeding the fourth runnier-up, Cube Entertainment, established artists like Wonder Girls, 2PM, 2AM and Miss A, and of course, Park Jin Young's extremely irresistible plastic pants, there is no doubt in my mind that JYP is still in the game... just a bit more subtle. And with the company promising to use this year to redeem their name with numerous comebacks planned from their artists during 2013, I have to say, I'm actually looking forward to what they have in store. Nevertheless, before JYP can even dream of getting back on top, they have to fix their artists' stability first which is much easier said than done given the seemingly forever increasing baggage that JYP has managed to pick up (including Wonder Girls' wasteful American advancement that kicked them from the top spot in the Korean world and got them no where in the American world, Sunye's recent marriage and pregnancy announcement hitting yet another blow on the company's arguably most popular group, Miss A's Suzy basically being source of popularity and the imbalance causing the whole of Miss A to not be able to strive fully and of course, Wooyoung out of all the artists' basically putting dinner in JYP's plate last year).
Contenders for the 'Big Three' to worry about?
As JYP dove, not only did SM and YG prosper, lesser-known companies like Cube, Starship, Pledis, and TS have also grown and have became more and more successful, raising chart-topping groups like After School, 4 Minute, B.A.P and SISTAR. With these companies moving up the chain so quickly, the sharks at the top of the food chain, YG and SM, need to being preparation as well as the fallen company, JYP. In the future, there's no telling what the Big 3 will look like and what companies will fall, rise or stay the same.
Fundamentally, it's safe to say that the two members of the Big 3, SM and YG, are still chilling at the top of the food chain, battling it out between each other in the midst of all the unsurity... However, is it also okay to say that JYP still has a permanent spot in the Big 3, even though they experienced downfall? What do you think about this?
