Flash to the Past: The Legend of SHINHWA

Hey, ladies and gentleman! Today we are going to look at the real legends that have made their eternal mark in K-pop History, are known for standing together, dealt with all the advantages and disadvantaged of fame and being a star... yeah, those legends. Most articles say that the expected duration of an idol is normally five years but is that really true? My answer? No. In fact, I don't really believe this theory. And because of that, today on K-pop Ranter, I, Jazmine am going to go back and look at the stars that have never failed throughout the years, have made my hearts burst, my ovaries explode and brain wild. By the way, if you have missed any of our previous 'Flash to the Past' segments, you can check them out here! So without further adieu, let's get started!

Anyway... this is kind of a new thing! About every week till I give up (kind of limited!) I will be releasing a legend that has made their mark. All you old K-pop lovers know what I am talking about, haha...!
First up are my all-time favorite babies. SHINHWA they will forever be my oppars no matter if they are ahjusshir's (or harabojir's).

They, SHINHWA, debuted in 1999 and even since then, they have that young energy that not a lot of back-in-the-day K-pop singers have today. Songs like "T.O.P" and "Perfect man" made high school Korean boys lose their girlfriends over the sounds of the all time legends. Ultimately, their name says it all and they have proved themselves to be the all-time winners. Although, groups such as "Super Junior" and "Supernova" are tried to surpass them throughout the years, they haven't even came close. SHINHWA's already have it marked down.

  -------->

SHINHWA has not only swayed the hearts of teenage girls and other "youngens" all around the world back in the day, but they also influenced other great K-pop groups and artists, too and have won many awards. They have had the most hardest choreography to do, have been in hundreds of variety shows, have even begun to mentor new groups and start their own company. And, of course, let's not forget to mention they started their own variety show called " Shinhwa" that have their own variety show called "Shinhwa Broadcast" that have
showed people old and young that they still have that spark they had from when they started. Shinhwa came back in 2012  with "Venus" and man oh man, did it surprise me! Their concert also was a huge promotion for them too. I was like "Woohoo they got a concert called 'The Return'" and then later with their 16th album title concert "The Classic".... OMG!!! These men have truly shown once again (I say that no matter what) that they are legends forever.

Additional Info :

Taken from wikipedia, Shinhwa made history in the Korean music industry by becoming the longest-running Korean boy band with the release of its sixth album, Wedding, on December 6, 2002. They also became the second artist in South Korea to release two albums in a single year. Wedding debuted and peaked at #3 and sold 273,714 copies.

On December 10, 2004, Shinhwa was awarded the Daesang for Best Artist of The Year for the first time at the Seoul Gayo Daesang Awards. Several weeks later, on December 29, Shinhwa was awarded their second Daesang at the 2004 SBS Gayo Daejun Award.

Shinhwa received the most awards, totaling thirteen or more, from various places: the m.net KMTV Music Video Festival, Seoul Gayo Daesang, Golden Disc Awards and MBC, KBS, SBS Gayo Awards. The awards other than Best Artist of the Year included Best Male Artist, Best Dance Artist, and Overseas Choice Award.

Shinhwa was the first boyband to transition from the "Shaggy hair" to nice cut neat hair and were the first to use suits in their music videos witch was uncommon among boy groups.

Though Shinhwa was on hiatus, the members expanded their solo activities even further, including the members leaving Shinhwa's management company to start their own: M Rising (Min Woo), New Dream Entertainment (Andy), JF Story Entertainment (Jun Jin), H2 Entertainment (Dong Wan), and Top Class Entertainment (Eric).

Shinhwa became the first K-pop group to own their own entertainment company, when they established the 'Shinhwa Company', a joint venture agency for members to perform as a group. It is helmed by Eric and Min-woo as co-CEOs, with the remaining members as shareholders. The Company manages the group as a whole, whilst members' individual activities are managed by their respective agencies

Shinhwa has sold an excess of 5 million records worldwide, an incredible feat for an Asian group and one of the highest album sales in Asia.
A star in 2005 was named after Shinhwa.
Their dance moves has been describe as "evil," "complicated," and "difficult-to-follow" with few people being able to copy their dance moves.

Lastly, here are the top 10 songs by Shinhwa

Friday Flash to the Past: (2003-2006) Beginning of Modern Hallyu Wave

Hello, Nihao, Konnichiwa, Hola, Annyeonghaseyo, Salam... basically, welcome to another beautiful segment of Flash to the Past. Did you miss any of our other posts? If so, you can check them out here.

To begin, 2003 marked the beginning of the modern day Hallyu Wave for K-pop. From the smooth R&B to Hip-Hip on to
mind-blowing, electronic sounds and the rock and pop, companies were taking the advantage of this time to make huge surprises having fresh new styles, flavor and targeting new markets.

Today's Lesson: Beginning of Modern Hallyu

The Big 3, SM, YG and JYP, once again slayed charts as well as the forever lingering DSP Entertainment.  SM came out with the amazing groups DBSK and Super Junior, YG had Big Bang whom surpassed many groups with their great music, DSP came out with SS501 which rose to the top and JYP well... was JYP for the time being.

Ever heard of the saying 'Always Keep Faith'? If you have, you get extra cool points for today's lesson, you, already knowing something about the Gods Rising in the East aka TVXQ. Being together (in fan's hearts) for 10 solid years and inheriting the nicknames of 'Kings of K-Pop', 'Asia's Stars' and 'Kings of the Hallyu Wave' due to their undeniable success, the five member boy group debuted in late 2003 (in a Britney Spears - BoA showcase) or early 2004 (their song officially was released) with their debut song 'Hug', becoming successful and exceeding beyond expectations by captivating teenage girls and pedonoonars alike. Their song maintained the position of number 4 on monthly charts and sold over 100,000 copies, making the fourteenth best-selling record of the year.
Unfortunately after their height with Mirotic, DB5K's numbers dropped to only DB2K, SM Entertainment ruining yet another one of their kick-ass groups and leaving only Changmin and Yunho to promote for themselves. Other than that, TVXQ is still one of the best-selling K-Pop group in the world, releasing six Korean albums, six Japanese albums and a bajillion of singles, they've raked in millions of sales and still remains at the top of my heart.

Seo_TaiJi_And_BoysSuper Junior originally was named 'Super Junior 05', debuting with their single 'Twins' which sold over a hundred thousand copies as of now. Originally an eleven member group, Super Junior grew to their biggest yet, having thirteen handsome men to rock the stage. Over the years, they divided into smaller subgroups (one of the most popular: Super Junior KRY which was their vocal unit) and simultaneously targetted different music industries and audiences. Largely due to Super Junior's success as entertainers, other Korean entertainment managements began to train their music groups with hopes to match Super Junior's popularity.
The group earned fourteen music awards from the MNET Asian Music Awards, sixteen from the Golden Disk Awards and is the second group to win favorite group on MTV Asia, best-selling artist for three years in a row and in 2012, nominated for 'Best Asian Act' on MTV Europe, winning sixtreen awards after JTL in 2003. Just like their label mates, TVXQ, they inherited the name 'Kings of the Hallyu Wave' and became largely popular with their best-selling single 'Sorry Sorry' in 2009.

Watch Twins and Sorry Sorry below:

While SM Entertainment rose to the top and JYP Entertainment prepared for following years, YG surprised the other companies with their five member group Big Bang. Debuting in 2006 with their song 'La La La', not becoming very relevant until their songs 'Lies' and 'Haru Haru'. Big Bang's leader, G-Dragon, composed and wrote many of the tracks  in their first mini-album 'Always', releasing their song 'Lies' as their lead single and selling  nearly a hundred thousand copies while topping various charts. The same year, they released their next mini, Hot Issue, with song 'Last Farewell' which introduced a new style of music to K-Pop and caused Big Bang to widen their fan base. Big Bang is known for their unique urban-originated music and fashion style. The members' involvement in composing and producing their own music, most notably leader G-Dragon, has earned the group respect and praise from music industry experts. Winning many awards, Big Bang has been proclaimed "Best Male Group", " Artist of the year" as well as "Leaders of the Hallyu Wave" by Billboard itself. Check out Haru Haru and LaLaLa.

Additional Info & Groups:

As stated before, DSP had their group SS501 to compete with the SM boys. In 2005, SS501 formed as "Five Members United as One Forever" and debuted with their first song Warning to begin making their mark on K-Pop. Releasing their second single Snow Prince but taking a brief hiatus later, they came back in 2006 and promoted their first album S.T.01 Now. They gained a lot of fans nationally and internationally, debuting in Japan in 2007 with Kokoro and murdering Oricon and being the first Korean artist to receive the award Best Newcomer in Japan. Later, they released numerous other songs and projects before going off in their own ways, their last song together being 'Luv Ya'.

Debuting under Woolim Enterainment, Epik High added their own flavor to music. Although typical K-pop consisted of mostly singing and dancing, the trio wanted to make their raps popular. The group had managed to catch the hearts of fans with their hit singles. The title songs, "Fan", and "Love Love Love" became huge hits in 2007.The album sold almost more than a hundred thousand copies and pushed Epik High made the trio one of the best upcoming artist. The group was chosen as the best artist of the month. Next for the Japanese market,  Epik High rose to fame internationally with the song "Flow" the album selling 120,301 copies during the year, making it the third best-selling album of 2007 in South Korea.

To end this segment of Flash To The Past, ladies and gentlemen, which Idol group do you think reached its high expectations entering the global market?

Friday Flash to the Past: (1997-2002): Girl Group Growth

Seo_TaiJi_And_BoysWelcome ladies, gentlemen and embarrassing 12-year old others I have to say are fellow K-Pop fans. Don't know what this segment is yet because of the too complicated and undeniably  mesmerizing title? Fine, I'll tell you. It's the 3rd episode of the weekly 'Flash to the Past', where I tell you about K-Pop history step-by-step, and if you haven't checked out any of the previous segments, you can here. Backtracking on the chronological timeline from our previous lesson of the Big 3, we're moving towards the time period of 1997 to 2002 when girl group power entered the image.

Today's Lesson: 3 G's - Girl Group Growth

SM hit big with groups such as H.O.T, SHINHWA and Fly to the Sky however, in 1998, they again hit  another home run with their new project S.E.S. With the 3 members Bada, Eugene and Shoo, S.E.S. hoped to slay the charts and passother competitors YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment and DSP Media in the race of popularity and revenue... and they did. Their debut song was 'I'm Your Girl'.

With SM Entertainment hitting success with their group S.E.S., they continue to press their luck on girl power with their solo artist BoA debuting in 2000. At the time, being famous worldwide was not as much of an issue as being new and unique. From ol' R&B and Hip-hop came a new style of electro sounds where unnirs and oppars from all over relinquished themselves to the hype. At the age of 13, this young girl surprised everyone with smooth dance moves on her debut single "ID; Peace B".

Seo_TaiJi_And_Boys
Another growing power in the K-Pop industry was DSP Media's group, Fin K.L, DSP Media not being new to the contribution of the birth of K-Pop, having groups like Click B and Sechs Kies still under their control. Fin K.L became unarguably one of the most popular groups during this time period, their first debut song being 'Blue Rain' and hitting more than a quarter million sales. Though disbanding in 2002 (and regrouping 2005 for their last song), the individual members are pursuing their own entertainment-related activities, Hyori being a solo artist, Joohyun being a teacher at Dong Seoul College and the last two members Jin and Yuri being an actresses.

Seo_TaiJi_And_BoysLastly, the 5 members as well as the 4 previous members EZ, Hee Jin (now television actress), Kan Mi Youn (now solo artist), EunJin (now solo artist, actress and even has her own clothing line!), EunHye (now big screen actress), YuMi, HyunJung, SiWoon and Gai kicked ass in their now irrelevant company, DR Music. Though with their debut song '머리하는 날' being a failure, the group came back with their song 'Ya Ya Ya' which caused their popularity to rise supremely.

Other great groups you should check out:

Jewelry

Formed under Star Empire Entertainment in 2001, this originally four member group kicked butt and gave Korean K-Pop lovers a huge surprise with their debut song "Superstar" written by Minwoo from SHINHWA. Though undergoing numerous member changes (the original members aren't even there anymore), Jewelry is also the longest lasting girl group in Korea and the more famous, former members Seo In Young and Park Jung Ah have began solo activities.

M.I.L.K

Haven't heard of this group? Probably because they're just another product of SM and were disbanded in only 2 years time! Their debut song was WILD (literally, it was called 'Wild) but disbanded after the withdrawal of Bae Yumi in 2003.

SWI.T
The first YG girl group on this list, SWI.T debuted back in 2002 with their kick ass song "Everybody Get Down" which made everyone love them... however, when they were at their height, they disbanded in 2005.

-

Many girl groups debuted, but sadly ended their journey before they can be called even somewhat popular. Boy groups were basically the rulers of the industry back then and took over the charts as well as stole the hearts of fan girls.

Friday Flash to the Past: (1994-1999) K-Pop On the Rise

Welcome to yet another glorious week of my segment, Flash to the Past, where I give a (somewhat) decent description of the history of K-Pop and the making of the still ongoing K-Pop, including hot tracks for you to listen to, the greatest and most impactful groups of all K-Pop time and videos that I'm pretty sure, you all will like. If you didn't catch my previous Flash to the Past which was the Beginning of K-Pop, you can check it out right here.

Today's Lesson: The Big 3 Back Then

The years 1994 through 1999 went by gloriously, Kpop artists becoming more experienced with heavy metal, midi music, R&B and so on and so forth. Of course, though year 1992 marked the beginning of kpop where more and more noonars and hyungs  became aware of these groups and started to grow feelings towards them, the time K-Pop hit huge was back in 1995 when Lee Soo Man came into the picture and created the company we otherwise know as SM Entertainment.

"Ayo, stop! Let me put it down another way!":

SME was formed in 1995, training willing hopefuls and producing epic groups but it wasn't until arguably around 1996 to 1999-ish till K-Pop exploded. Debuting their first ever group, H.O.T., back in 1996, SM basically invented a new method of producing music and adding flavor, a new style of K-Pop being a somewhat mixture of R&B, Metal, Rock, Electro and Midi music. H.O.T was undeniably a big hit back in the day, making SM Entertainment noticed in the Korean entertainment world and being named as one of the legends in K-Pop, debuted with their first album "We Hate All Kinds of Violence" however, stirring controversy with plagiarism issues therefore releasing a single "Candy" and gaining popularity from that.

YG Entertainment later followed and the previous Seo Taiji and Boys maknae, Yang Hyun Suk, sat on throne as CEO. 1TYM was their first boy group to debut in November 1998, and with their four members Jin Hwan, Hong Jun, Baekkyoung and Taebin, they slayed charts and stole the hearts of fans with their song "One Time for Your Mind".

Lastly, JYP Entertainment took their share of the first generation idol pie and debuted G.O.D. back in 1999, their songs famous for the messages inside them. Even until today, this legend is still considered an inspiration to many of today's idols and their songs still move the hearts of numerous people throughout the world, their debut song entitled "To Mother".

Eye-Candy:
H.O.T. - Kangta

1TYM - Danny

G.O.D. - Kye Sang

Additional Info:
The year 1999 was the final year of the debuts of guy groups from the Big 3 and the last year of the explosion of K-Pop, SM Entertainment leading the way and other companies, such as JYP Entertainment, YG Entertainment, DSP Media (with Sech Kies) following. Though the 20th century's K-Pop isn't very well remembered from new K-Pop fans, there is still much rememberance from the older fans of the the creation of K-Pop.

Friday Flash to the Past: (1992) Beginning of K-Pop

Seo_TaiJi_And_BoysIt's been years since I've first been into K-Pop. Those scarce K-Pop fans who have been hooked to first generation idols, from memory can name all the members of SHINHWA as well as their group position and current ages, knows all the words to Baby Vox's debut title track 'Scissors' and still fangirls whenever I see the now disbanded Baby Vox's Kan Mi Yeon making a solo comeback... yeah, that's me.

Throughout the years, it seems like the more and more we hear songs like Girls' Generation's Gee, watch dances like Rania's Doctor Feel Good, and fap fangirl over the next promiscuous oppar grabbing his non-existent and sock-stuffed crotch, we forget about the good ol' days. The establishment and the whole... creation of K-Pop. We always remember the popular groups of now but why can't we also give a bit of a tribute to the popular groups from the past?

Baby_VoxAnd that's where I come in.

Every Friday, with my new segment on K-Pop Ranter, I'll be giving a flashback to the past. A lil' bit of... the roots of oppar's and unnir's history. A little shake up from those crotch-grabbing, ass-popping shenanigans we all are used to seeing in modern day K-Pop.
So let's get started, shall we?

Today's Lesson: Beginning of Time K-Pop

Ah, yes. K-pop back in the 90's. Most definitely one of the best times of K-Pop.
To start, K-pop started in the 1992 with the boy group Seo Taiji and the Boys. If you barely know anything about them, you probably would know that YG Entertainment's current CEO, Yang Hyun Suk, was actually the maknae of the group. Interesting, right?
Anyway, this boy group brought some fans to K-pop though not as much as it currently does right now (mostly because technology became bigger in this century). Even though they were only popular domestically and not much internationally, they were still a pretty great group and foundation for K-Pop as it is today. In fact, this group was basically the first point in the metaphorical K-Pop timeline and the beginning of a new era and style of music.

Recommended Song:

Seo Taiji and the Boy's debut broadcasted on MBC in 1992 and was judged by critics.
Though the judges gave the lowest score in the show, the audience thought the new style of music was great and wanted to see more of it in the future.

Eye Candy:

From left to right, Yang Hyun Suk, Seo Taiji and Kim Won Jun

Additional Info:
As stated before, Seo Taiji and Boys (if you were wondering, consisted of members Seo Taiji, Yang Hyun Suk and Kim Won Jun) were extremely famous domestically. In 1992, they debuted with their hit song "I Know", making it big in Korea. In only 18 weeks, they were considered "famous" and had 17 impressive number one records (record broken by Big Bang). Unfortunately, in 1996, the group retired and split they went their own ways, Yang Hyun Seok still in the music business with his amazing company YG Entertainment.
