Top 10 - Songs of 2013
2013 was a great or changing year for almost every single group. Crayon Pop burst their way to fame, Girls' Generation won a bunch of awards, 2NE1 finally came back, there were Big Bang solo comebacks, Girls' Day rose to fame and well, Wonder Girls and KARA got fucked. Either way, we all have to admit, though the year is done, it was one of the most flamboyant years of K-Pop. But because it finished, I have to go into detail of my favorite songs of 2013 simply because, that's what I do. So without further ado, here's the top songs of 2013.
1. GLAM - In Front of The Mirror
Tiffany: I still can't get rid of how fucktasticly fucktastic this song is. Like, how is that even possible? It placed almost the top of the first 6 months of 2013 and now it's the top of this half. Not only does it have so much meaning but it's also a great listen. This also kind of makes me realize how smaller, less popular groups tend to have the better quality songs than larger groups who just release songs with hopes of raking up the dough. This also makes me realize how much I wish GLAM was more popular than all the other groups who simply act like they could give less fucks about whether or not we're happy and only care about our money (I mean, it's true for every group but don't make it so obvious with your shitty songs!)
2. Bangtan Boys - Born Singer
Tiffany: Did I mention I'm a huge fan of Bangtan Boys? I love about all of their tracks but the track that really got to me was Born Singer. Sure, all of their tracks tend to speak the truth but this one is a song that I could play in the car, look out the window and pretend I'm in a sad movie with... which are the kind of tracks that always gets my thumbs up. Although there is an original and they kind of just redid this song, I could care less. Still good.
3. Taeyang - Ringa Linga
Tiffany: I'm a fan of Taeyang. I'm a fan of Big Bang. I'm a fan of this song. I would have learned the dance if I wasn't so uncoordinated. I can't help but shit my pants when the 'Ringa Linga Ling Ringa Linga Ling' part comes and even though his hair was crazy, I could barely tell. Sorry guys, I just have to be biased on this one. This song was da shet. (what if he fell of that bridge?)
4. Girls' Day - Female President
Tiffany: I'm not usually a fan of females sticking out their asses but when I am, it's Yura's ass. Regardless of the music video, Female President is definitely one of the best songs of the year. Fuck what everyone thinks. My mind is more superior than yours. #narcissismatitsfinest
5. Brown Eyed Girls - Kill Bill
Tiffany: Sure, the whistles was a rip off from the real movie and so was basically everything else. Get your panties out of a bunch. It's weird how people act like K-Pop is so damn original, anyway. Kill Bill was the shiet.

Top 10: Biggest Lies in K-Pop
"We eat 3,000 calories a day!"

While SECRET's Hyosung played dumb about the democratization claim, T-ara's Hyomin made perfect sense by saying:
"When I was in high school, there were rumors about me being an iljin. It was only because I was friends with those type of kids in my neighborhood, but I wasn't anything more than that."
So a lot (if not all) of your friends were iljins but you weren't? Okay, Hyomin.

I mean, unless we were all naturally conceived with BB cream and different filters all over our face and body, then you could look good but probably not that good in real life. |

Although some idols can actually be telling the truth, it's probably more common that when an idol says that, it's false. Whether it was in elementary school, training or even post-debut, I bet a lot of them got some smooching one way or another. |

| Its estimated that one in five women in South Korea have gotten plastic surgery at least once... the number obviously increasing with female idols. Although maybe some surgeries aren't that obvious, others simple are inarguable. |

DJ Put It Back On: Past KPOP Collaborations
There have been many past collaborations in the history of KPOP, be it to collaborate to perform a cover of a song, to collaborate to perform one of their songs, or to collaborate to release an original. To name a few, there have been collaborations between Big Bang and 2NE1 for Lollipop (above), f(x) and Super Junior for Oops, Yonghwa and Juniel for Fool and the list is virtually never-ending. Unlike stages by the individual acts themselves, the amount of attention these kind of performances receive is often short-lived, perhaps due to the fact that these kind of performances are usually one-off kind of affairs.
Today, I stand (or more appropriately, type) here with the simple desire of wanting to bring some of the past KPOP collaborations back into the spotlight because they really do deserve to be appreciated once again for the musical and/or entertainment value that they offer. After much research, blood, sweat and tears, I have finally come up with a collated a list of past K-POP collaborations (mostly stages) split into many different categories for your easy reference. I have also provided the Youtube videos for the better ones (of course, these are just my personal picks). Enjoy! (do note that these only involve musical collaborations, not dance ones!)
1. Bromance & Sisterly/Family Love
One of the cutest and most adorable K-POP collaborations ever has got to be this - a special stage on the 2011 SBS Entertainment Awards jointly performed by hyung Kim Jongkook and dongsaeng Haha, a brotherly relationship that they have long established on Running Man. They performed December (orginially by Turbo) and Rosa (originally by Haha). This special stage eventually goes on to include the hilarious dance featurings of Lee Kwangsoo and Yoo Jaesuk, showcasing the rapport and chemistry between the 4 lovely Running Man cast members.
Other performances to check out:
- December + Black Cat + Twist King by Jongkook + Haha - Another collaboration between the brothers performing 3 Turbo hits, but in a much darker setting, comparably more serious, less freestyle, but just as fun!
- Tik Tok (originally by Ke$ha) + California Gurls (originally by Katy Perry) by Jessica Jung + Krystal Jung - 2 collaboration performances between the Jung sisters for SMTown concerts along with choreographed dance moves.
- Definitely not a 'performance', but boasting of such a strong tangible family love between the Running Man members way beyond that of cast members from any typical variety show (tsk and because I am a Running Man fan) that I had to include it. So here's their Turbo Dance Party! It's slightly saddening that Running Man is becoming so scripted in recent times, because it is simply this wild lovable side of Running Man that anybody needs to see to fall in love with them.
2. Sunbae-Hoobae
This is the exact stage that convinced me to write this post! As part of an SMTown Concert, Girls Generation's TaeTiSeo and EXO's members Chanyeol, D.O., Sehun and Luhan's performed a take of DJ Got Us Falling In Love Again (originally by Usher ft. Bull). And this is truly incredible as throughout the performance, TTS and EXO were completely in sync. The energy level was great, and (keke) the interaction between TTS and EXO was unbelievably adorable and loving.
Other Performances to Check Out:
- Rose by Lee Hi ft. CL - CL made a featuring rap in one of Lee Hi's promotional stages for Rose, and it wasn't really a good fit but was a sunbae-hoobae collaboration all the same.
- Way Back Into Love by Super Junior (Kyuhyun, Donghae) and Girls' Generation (Taeyeon, Jessica) - Quite a sweet collaboration with harmonizing, no 'wow' factor anywhere here though!
3. KPOP Star Special Stages
There have been many collaboration stages on KPOP Star between contestants (within the same season as well as across seasons 1 and 2) as well as between a contestant and an idol from the Big 3. The most impressive stage to me would be the joint performance by Lee Hi (Season 1) and 2000 Won (Season 2) of Love The Way You Lie (originally by Rihanna). The song choice was great (the song style suited both very well), and the arrangement of the song was brilliant, where all 3 of them could stand out comfortably yet equally. Very emotional, beautiful.
- Good Girl Bad Girl by Lee Hi & Miss A (Season 1) - Miss A really helped to tone down a lot for this performance so that Lee Ha Yi can be comfortably included, and it was evident that Lee Ha Yi really enjoyed this stage with Miss A.
- Ma Boy 2 by (originally by Electroboyz feat. Hyorin) Baek Ah Yeon & Lee Seunghoon (Season 1) - These 2 really look adorable together and it was an overall really entertaining performance.
4. Couple Duet Style
Other performances to check out:
- Banmal Song by Seohyun and Yonghwa (the Goguma Couple on WGM) - another WGM singing their digital single live, but felt much more like a forced live collaboration and was slightly awkward/uncomfortable to watch. Still, pretty nice harmonizing here so it goes on the list!
- One Year Later by Onew and Jessica - as with above, this live collaboration of their song felt forced, but One Year Later is a really really moving song, that I just had to include it.
5. Instrumental-Vocal Collaboration
Other Performances to Check Out:
- I Love You by 2NE1 featuring Jung Sungha - Another acoustic collaboration between them, and just as brilliant.
- That XX by G-Dragon featuring Jung Sungha - Fellow YG labelmate with the aforementioned guitarist, but a vastly different performance style from the 2 videos above. More toned down on vocals accompanied with the sweet guitar strumming, a performance worth listening.
- Can You Hear Me by Taeyeon featuring Seohyun - A performance of the Beethoven Virus OST originally by Taeyeon at the 36th Korea Broadcasting Prizes, except with Seohyun on the piano. It was more of Taeyeon taking centre stage with her beautiful vocals and Seohyun at the side, but a collaboration all the same.
6. Instrumental+Vocal-Vocal Collaboration
This type of collaboration is an extension of the previous one, when the one on the instrumentals also has his/her share of vocals in the performance. The grandest performance I know from this category would definitely be Love Rain performed by Kim Tae Woo featuring Seohyun.
Other performances to check out:
- None of these performances are really fabulous, but they're worth listening to. And they both do away with all the glitz and glamour so this is really music for the soul. (Tsk and IU fans can get their treat here) So here's presenting IU and Taemin performing a song medley of Gee, Juliette and Hello and IU and Yonghwa performing Lucky (originally by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat).
7. Background Vocals - Lead Vocal Collaboration
8. Across an Entertainment Company
Artistes from many entertainment companies have released a song as a whole before, namely SMTown, YG Family, JYP Nation and United Cube, or have performed a song live together before (most commonly being at their company concerts). I for one have kept my attention on songs by SMTown for a long while, and the most memorable songs of all would have to be Only Love. It is a song that truely captures all heartfelt emotions in its lyrics well. And it actually doesn't sound disjointed even when it is really one line per person. Other performances to check out:
- Here are 2 more of SMTown songs that I like, Let's Go On A Vacation and Dear My Family. The former song is an upbeat, catchy and really fun song released in 2007 during Summer, while the latter is a more emotional song featuring only the vocal powerhouses from all of the idol groups.
9. Between the vocally strong
Other performances to check out:
- The KPOP finalists of the first season have collaborated on several occasions after the season has ended for vocal performances, namely Mercy (originally by Duffy, starting at 4:30) and We Found Love (originally by Rihanna). The former is performed by Park Ji Min, Lee Hi and Baek Ah Yeon, while the latter is only performed by the Park Ji Min and Lee Hi. Both of these performances are vocally strong, though not really impressive.
10. For a Cause
Other Performances to Check Out:
- You Raise Me Up by Jo Kwon, Jongkook, Taeyeon, Yonghwa, Jessica & Various Artistes - sung in support for the victims of the Haiti Earthquake
- Not a live stage, but will definitely tug at your heartstrings all the same. I Dream by 15& with Hanbit Bitsori Ensemble from Hanbit School for the Blind.

Number 10
HISTORY - Dreamer
Last but certainly not least is LOEN Entertainment's newest creation, HISTORY, who debuted with their song Dreamer. The song is definitely different than other song releases this year... the classy beat and the LOEN-fairytale-style video perfecting the song.
Number 9
SHINee - Dream Girl
Placing in 9th place is SHINee's Dream Girl. After their what seemed like a ten year Korean hiatus, SHINee released yet another chart-topping song depicting their image of a dream girl. Not only was the music video fun to watch, but the song was also fun to listen to and of course, it broke away from the typical SM Entertainment style video, making me like it even more.
Number 8
15& - Somebody
I want somebody, somebody, somebody, somebody, somebody to love, yeah!~ still plays constantly in my head. The song that was most definitely a change from their ballad debut song, I Dream, Somebody proved Park Jimin (winner of K-Pop Star season 1) and Baek Yerin worthy competition in the Korean idol industry.

SHINHWA - This Love
The legendary idol group, SHINHWA, celebrated their 15th anniversary this year and released their 11th album with title song This Love. To my surprise, SHINHWA still had what they had 15 years ago... if not, even more. Though most modern-day K-Pop fans don't give a rat's-ass about SHINHWA because they view them as old and shriveled, SHINHWA undoubtedly paved the way and shaped K-Pop to what it is today and deserve more recognition.

2PM - A.D.T.O.Y.
Though ranking low on charts, 2PM's A.D.T.O.Y. was actually a pretty damn good track. Although the dancing was sometimes cringe-worthy, the track actually wasn't half-bad. And despite the Nickhun scandal which definitely threw 2PM off of their high-standing position,
I put this song as one of the best Korean Pop Song of 2013 because the song really does deserve it.
Number 5
Dasoni - Goodbye
The EXID sub-unit, Dasoni, released their song 'Goodbye' in February of this year and which undeniably one of the most underrated songs of the year. I cannot even fathom as to why people haven't heard of this song or given it a chance... the song is extremely good.
Number 4
B.A.P. - Coffee Shop
Originally I was going to put One Shot in this place, however, after I heard B.A.P's newest song, Coffee Shop, I thought otherwise. Though it was just released a few days ago, B.A.P's Coffee Shop definitely exceeded all of my expectations. The music video was perfect, the song was perfect... Bang Yong Guk was perfect. Everything.
Number 3
T-ara N4 - Countryside Life
After the T-ara bullying scandal, it was basically like everyone labelled all their following releases as bad songs when that actually isn't the case. With the release of the sub-unit's, T-ara N4, song Countryside Life, which was not only a fun music video to watch, but also a great song to jam to, it proved that the group deserved a second chance... or at least a listen to the song.

GLAM - In Front of the Mirror
This song is more-or-less one of the most underrated songs of the year. What I like about this song most is the meaning of it, talking about what girls usually think when standing 'In Front of the Mirror' and showing off GLAM's more natural side. Honestly, even their other song 'I Like That' which was released this year as well was notably tasteful, however, just because of their lack of popularity, was pushed to the side while other shitty songs released around the same time as theirs *cough* I Got a Boy *cough* topped charts almost automatically. So, GLAM, though you aren't first place, you definitely do deserve to be this high up in the ranking, placing second with your amazing, meaningful and awesome song In Front of the Mirror.
Number 1
Jay Park - JOAH
With the other mediocre songs of the year, I'm not only surprised that Jay Park released a song that's more than tolerable but I'm also surprised he didn't win anything for this song while shit songs like EXO's Wolf won easily. Well, Jay, you deserve this one win. JOAH places first as best K-Pop song of mid-2013. Good job.
Tracks that didn't get in:
Girls' Generation - Beep Beep
Though this song was released as one of Girls' Generation's Japanese comebacks, we all can't deny that Girls' Generation's Beep Beep is a catchy song despite the cuteness, fluff and pink (Tiffany obviously had fun).
Ladies' Code - Bad Girl
Ladies' Code debut song, Bad Girl, was undoubtedly one of the best debut songs of the year... in fact, the whole Bad Girl album is astoundingly pleasing. If you have time, I suggest you check out their album song Super Girl.
DMTN - Safety Zone
Released in January of this year, DMTN came back with their song, Safety Zone. Despite DMTN Daniel's recent marijuana scandal, the music video and song was more than expected.
Bangtan Boys - No More Dream
With all bias aside, their debut song, No More Dream, was more than words can describe. Not only is the song, lyrics meanings and music video great, but like Ladies' Code debut, their album was also pleasing, too. I recommend the song We Are Bulletproof from their album.

Top 10: Sexiest Male Idols' Voice Pt 1
It's undeniable that if you're a female K-Pop fan, you will fall in love with idols for more than just their looks. You fall in love with their talent (well, if they have one), you fall in love with their dorkiness... and of course, you fall in love with their amazingly UNFtastic voices. And today on K-Pop ranter we will discuss the sexiest male voices in K-Pop starting with 20 and then going to the winner in the next post.
#20 - EXO-K's Baekhyun
Baekhyun's supreme vocals make me grow goose bumps. His hot voice will undoubtedly just make you find your happy place. Arguably, Baeky is one of the best vocalist in Exo-K but still lacks a little in mixing his sensational voice with the beat and sound of the song.
#19 - EXO-M's Kris
Though Kris has a sexy and deep voice that will make you "roll like buffalo", his rapping doesn't seem to have that... swag that rappers need.... Hopefully in the future, he can bring in add some more rhythm and emotion in his rapping that would make my ovaries explode.
#18 - Jay Park
This man seriously has guts from his previous career as a 2PM boy to his middle finger scandal... And without a doubt, his voice is so addicting words cannot describe the UNF. He has that bad boy swag and is a rapper that seriously has some 'flavor'.
#17 - SHINHWA's Hyesung
The old timer never fails to hit a high elecric shocking note. "You are my,my.my girl yeah~" In the song "Brand New" His voice gave me soul like i was touched my an angles strong ,bold and sexy voice .

#13 - B.A.P - Zelo
My lil' baby from B.A.P has pretty/bad boy swag and shows it. Besides Big Bang's G-Dragon, he is my secret husband and he just doesn't know it. His rapping skills go hardcore there is no doubt he will be my next pimp giving all you girls "No Mercy".
#12 - U-Kiss's Kevin
Kevin undoubtedly stands out from U-Kiss and what I admire about him is his 'eargasm' voice. It's so magnificent... from 'Man Man Hani' to 'Neverland' this mother father has skills.

Mir, the maknae of MBLAQ, has cute and sexy written all over him. His deep and 'pretty boy' voice will make you unconsciously smile to yourself. He's the main rapper of MBLAQ and when he raps "Baby say yes, yes, yes; Don't say no, no, no" in the MBLAQ song, MonaLisa, you will immediately become pregnant.
#15 - U-Kiss's Hoon
I have to admit, he may not have the best looks in U-Kiss but his voice is amazing. If I were to marry this guy, I would have him sing the Lullaby to me every single night.

Top 10: English K-Pop Entertainment Websites
For one's new to K-Pop or one's who are only familiar with few websites for their K-Pop news, they might wonder about K-Pop Entertainment sites that not only supply information, but makes them want to go back to the site. Here is a list of the best of the best English Korean Pop Entertainment sites in my opinion and why.
My Top 10: English K-Pop Entertainment Websites
Allkpop is unarguably the number one source for K-Pop news and gossip. This site also has the guest appearances of many popular groups, from their Wonder Girls appearance to their B.A.P appearance, allkpop has it all. They also come out with occasional, yet great OP-Ed articles and challenging contest to keep readers on the edge of their seats. Though they often publish uninteresting news (for example, every other article is about Suzy) over great articles which can attract many fans (I submitted 2NE1 appearing on British TV maniacally a few weeks ago and it still has not been published) and have posts with a lot of obvious mistakes in grammar, their news is, for the most part, up-to-date and great.
DKpopnews (Daily K-Pop News) is probably the site I visit most. There are more interesting articles posted by dkpopnews than allkpop at sometimes faster speeds, yet a lot less buzz. It's rare to see even a comment on this website and its events lack significantly if compared to sites like allkpop. Their last group meeting was with a group called "Girlfriend" in which 99% of the comments were stating their unawareness for even the group's existence. However, instead of spamming Suzy articles 24/7, it puts articles of other groups in which I have interest in without bias, which is something I appreciate.
3. ohkpop.com
This site is severely underrated. The news is better than allkpop and soompi combined and is almost at the dkpopnews range. It misses news dkpopnews failed to post and shows mostly relevant news rather than other, more popular sites. The only set back is that it's so underrated, it does not hold events or anything to look forward to. It has an "Interviews" section, yet it's not their own Interviews and rather other's Interviews. I recommend this site to anyone who wants to know the best of the best news and doesn't care much about the popularity of the site.
4. en.korea.com
This site is extremely amazing. It has it's own blog, fan clubs, store, technology tab, chat and even a health & beauty section. It's astonishing this site isn't the most popular. The news is up to par and the tabs of the site are very entertaining. The only set back is checking the site via mobile and going on the site's Facebook page. It's obvious on the home site, they can speak both Korean and English fluently (in which allkpop sometimes has trouble with doing on many of their articles) yet on the Facebook, it's obvious that the person or persons running it isn't fluent in both languages. Also, via mobile, it's hard to click the site and sometimes leads you to the artist's fanpage when you actually just want to read the article. Other than those flaws, this site is great.
5. soompi.com
Soompi, "the longest running K-Pop site since 1998", comes in at number 3. It's news is somewhat like allkpop's, not posting all but often posting uninteresting articles (one article was even about Suzy laughing) and it's comments aren't up to par with allkpop's comments which are instant. Many articles barely reach 10 comments and their "POPULAR" list to the right side bar shows it's relevance and popularity.
There were however, many articles posted that day.
It often posts articles that allkpop or dkpopnews has already beat it to, and is only there if you are truly bored and have already checked the top 2 sites.
Placing at number 6, kpopstarz is a good news source. If you happen to go on the Celebrity tab of the website, you'll notice that they have an extremely well-organized list of most of the Korean Pop celebrities and interesting bios. This website is also has langauges to choose from, so if your native language is either Spanish, Japanese, Chinese or English (ironic the Korean Pop website doesn't have Korean as a language) then this site is for you. Though the news isn't as well as kpopnews or ohkpop, nor is the homepage organized and is rather just a clutter of all of their tabs in one, this site is a good site to go on.
7. koreaboo.com
This site is undeniably one of Korean Entertainment's most powered site, bought by MNet and having a music community at last.fm, Koreaboo is great. The only trouble with the site is that it's something you probably wouldn't want to go to if you are already familiar with the sites above. This site has almost everything allkpop has posted, yet hours or even days later. Though the layout is very good, this site isn't recommended for someone who goes on allkpop frequently and not for someone who wants to know a lot of news about celebrities.
8. gokpop.com
This website places at number 9 for various reasons. Though this website is good, the comments lack, the news isn't as entertaining or exciting as the previously listed sites and the layout is barely above average. Their fan clubs, in which are listed to the right, aren't well populated due to the sites attention however they have KPop Charts and even Upcoming Birthdays which is a plus.
9. Social Networking Sites
Social Networking sites are in present day is probably the most used kind of sites in the world, even before pornography. "If Facebook was a country, it would be the 3rd most populated country in the world". Facebook, Twitter, YouTube are some of the best sites to check for k-pop news yet only if you follow or friend the good entertainment tellers. Most, if not all, of the K-Pop sites listed previously have at least a Twitter or a Facebook and publish their news through their social networking sites as well as through their homepage in nearly the same time so it's up-to-date depending on which site you either like, follow, etc. on your social networking page. There's no true setbacks in social networking, as the comments are abundant depending on which site you are using and which site you are relying on for your news, the news is up to date and it's entertaining.
10. K-Pop Forums
Many of the sites listed previously have a k-pop forum, the most popular k-pop forums happen to be forums.allkpop.com, forums.soompi.com, 6theory.com, hallyu8.com, etc. (I'm planning to publish and article of the different forums, so stay tuned and check frequently until it's published!). Most of the time, the forums has it's own "news bot" if it's a forums of an already big entertainment/news website (example: allkpop forums has a news bot and it's own section to post allkpop.com posted news). If it's not posted by the bot, many forum users follow many of the previously listed sites and post the news information on the forums before many people have even heard about it. Depending on the forums popularity, the members can either be abundant or be scarce and if the members are scarce, chances are, the news is scarce as well. However, if you choose the right forums, they can be the perfect source of information.
