Girls' Generation is back with their better-late-than-never comeback "I Got a Boy". Watch it below.

To start, this song is definitely one you have to get used to. It was all K-Pop group concepts jam-packed into a 4 minute 30 second song. There was some sexiness, a big of "bad-ass", a touch of cuteness mixed together with their subtle common and overused concept to create this already chart-topping and confusing comeback.
On the positive end of this comeback, it was what one would say 'unique'. Something no one in the modern day K-Pop industry attempted before was released for the first time. Not only that, but this song could attract anyone: lovers of hip-hop, lovers of cute concepts, lovers of sexiness and of course, lovers of Girls' Generation.

However, on the negative end, this title track was all but satisfactory. At first listen, I was confused. I couldn't understand if I couldn't understand the rampant transition changes--one second there was a trying-to-hard-to-be-fierce rap by Sooyoung and the next, someone was winking at the camera while singing cutely. It was almost as if SM Entertainment tried too hard... or didn't try at all. Though, be, being a lover of basically all genre possible was left unimpressed and disappointed after waiting 15 months to only be left with 4 minutes of shit to listen to. The concepts in the song were just unbearably random. There was fierceness with Hyoyeon and Yuri's rap, sexiness with the unforgettable hip thrust, Seohyun not fitting in place as usual while trying to act like a mixture of sexy and cute however executing it terribly, an abundance of Sunny's ugly hair and more. Though some SONEs claim this mix-up was "creative" and people who disliked the whole ordeal say this was "messy", I have to give my take in this whole song and say it was just awkward and perplexing. There were some parts in which I literally cringed (the distasteful groaning of "UH") and was tempted to exit out of the video. Sooyoung's wanna-be-bad-ass was unbearable, Taeyeon's cuteness was just out of place, Seohyun was just all kinds of wrong (which shouldn't surprise anyone) and in full honesty when I saw Tiffany as well as the rest of Girls' Generation in those ugly orange wigs, I nearly jetted out.

The only ones who looked in place and decent were Yuri and Hyoyeon, although Hyoyeon to my surprise only received a low amount of lines in rapping while people who couldn't save rap to save their life (Yoona specifically) received more.
In addition, although many people claim that the transitions in the song are due to the lyrics, I read the lyrics and I was still left unimpressed. There was nothing special nor was there a hidden meaning for further understanding left in the lyrics nor are the lyrics an excuse to explain the horrible sound. It's almost as if people want to be optimistic and give excuses to explain the comeback because it's their unnirs and noonars they're talking about... but realistically, this comeback was a big joke. Furthermore, after their album 'Run Devil Run' released in 2010, Girls' Generation's title tracks and music videos have been lessening in quality so with this shitty song in place, there isn't much excuse to why this comeback sucked so much other than the composer of the song (apparently the same person who made Tell Me Your Wish... seems like his compositions have been going down in quality as well) just didn't compose a good song.
In conclusion, I Got a Boy has to be one of my least favorite Girls' Generation songs to this day (after Flower Power and The Boys). Though there were positive elements in this title track that made it worth the wait, there were a surpassing number of bad reasons as to why this was a bad song. Additionally, I would recommend for anyone who was let down with this horrible comeback song to check out the songs in their album.

What did you think about I Got a Boy? Loved it? Hated it?

  1. I've listened to six songs on the new album and this is my least favorite so far. I liked parts of the song, but the transitions were a little jarring, hell, they weren't ever there. But I disagree about Yuri and Hyoyeon being the only ones that looked good. Yoona, Jessica, Taeyeon and Tiffany all looked alright to me.

SM would have been better served to make the song sort of like this

    1. What I meant by looking good was fitting the concept. To be honest, they all looked good. I just think that Yuri and Hyoyeon were the only one to match the "hip-hop" as people call it concept.

  2. For me, the song was alright. But now looking at the lyrics, its starting to be a dislike to me. The lyrics are just unbearable. One minute their talking about how this girl changed her style, and then the next minute their talking about how pretty and sexy they are. Its just all over the place. Now the positive is that I liked how they danced. It was fierce, with a little elements of cute and sexy. But the beat was good, if they didn't go from slow tempo to fast tempo. Overall, it was just average to me. Not bad, But also not the greatest(gee being my favorite). Honestly, if they kept it at one tempo, it would've been good. I also think that hyoyeon should of just gotten all of the rap parts since her's were good. Maybe tiffany, but then again she gets all of the singing parts. Yuri i'll accept also. But the rest were just terrible. (p.s.- the outfits were from good, to average)

    1. (yes this is the same person) No, I'm no defending snsd with this comeback. I just think they could've done a better job at it

    2. I agree with the Hyoyeon rap part. They gave rap lines to Yoona and to be honest, I think Hyoyeon could have done it twice as good. Hyoyeon only received 2-3 lines in the song which is appalling being that this song had a lot of rap lines, as she's arguably the best rapper in the group.

  3. The song is fine after listening to it 2 or 3 times.

The worst thing about the song is the sudden breaks - 1st into the dance break and the Tiffany/Taeyeon 'solos'. If you read the lyrics, you can see the reasons they did, but I dont understand it. The flow of the song with much better without it.

With that being said, the song is fine and I really dot get the 'hate' for the song. I think it has to do with more that it is Girls Generation than anything else and them being #1. I am happy that SNSD (or the SM producers) tried something out-of-their comfort zone instead of being safe.

    1. I don't agree with the assumption of where the hate is coming from. Even if big groups like Wonder Girls, 2NE1, T-ara or smaller groups like A Pink, Dal Shabet, D-Unit released this song, many people including me, still wouldn't like it.
I like some parts of the song, for example, the main chorus part and the "Oh, oh, eh, oh~" part however, the transitions for me were unbearing and even when reading the lyrics to trying to put them together with the random transitions, I still couldn't understand.
I think the like of this song has to do with a matter of taste, how much of a fan you are of SNSD and how many times you're willing to replay it to make yourself like it.

  4. yea, the transitions were confusing. The first time I heared the song, it was really confusing. But after a couple of times hearing it, i'm a little ok with it. But its still confusing in my eyes. I agree that there were way to many "sudden breaks". It would've been ok if they did one but more than that was too many for me. the flow would've been way better that way.

Yea, its good to get out of the comfort zone, but SM went a little to far from that zone.

  5. I just watched the live version from Music Core and I think that it sounds better live.

    It was also midriff heaven.

  6. IA it's a performance song. The changes they made while performing along with the visual stimulation make it an interesting move. I wonder if more groups will go with a performance tailored tittle track in the future. Something to watch on your ipod as opposed to listening to it.

    1. I have to say that I disagree with this. I think IGAB was just meant as a song, nothing to be put in a specific category in. There's just excuses after excuses as to why the rapid song changes happens. However, I respect your views towards this topic.

  7. i watched a performance where they cut tiffany/taeyeon solos (orange wig stuffs) and i have to admit it sounded much more bearable, the flow of the song is better
and yes, they should have just let hyoyeon or yuri take yoona's part. she's not that good in rapping...but then again, how many lines do yoona get in this song?
