- Review: SNSD's Comeback - I Got a Boy Teaser/Dancing Queen MV

Watch the pre-release video here:
After 13 months, Girls' Generation finally released a Korean music video, entitled "Dancing Queen" and are planning to release the full length album "I Got a Boy" on the 1st of January, 2013.
Starting out with my thoughts on the video “Dancing Queen”, I have to say that I was disappointed more than usual (with their consistent box style videos and their haphazard songs) with this pre-release music video and track. The song was just a cover of Duffy's 2008 released song, Mercy, meaning there is truly no new content to become familiar to and jam to. Not only that, this video was simply one that SM Entertainment salvaged and recycled from the year 2008, without any real effort
except for the 20 seconds in the beginning in which Girls Generation did nothing but huddle around a out-of-date mp3 player. This video lacked the effort and the amazement in which I’m pretty sure the vast majority of people anticipating this comeback for more than a year expected. The dance wasn’t spectacular and the singing wasn’t even comparable to the original or even Lee Hi’s mesmerizing cover of the song. The language as well as the meaning to the song was also changed, making it sound odd due to my accustomation to the original “Mercy”. And to be bluntly honest, this is probably my least favorite comeback of all the Girls’ Generation comebacks.
In addition to the video, I have to note the whole “I Got a Boy” album, releasing on January 1st, 2013, might just be a huge let-me-down. Rumored by some people, there will be total of 10 songs found in the album in which all 10 will be covers to other legendary songs (1 for each of the 9 members as well as the group cover “Dancing Queen”). If this is rumor turns out to be true, I don’t know about you, but I’m really not looking forward to the majority of Girls Generation members who can barely utter a note without sounding like a dying hyena ruining a good song whilst the minority (TaeTiSeo specifically) who sound somewhat tolerable however, still make the song sound like shit.
I have to say, the only plus to this whole comeback was the teaser for the album. The teaser concept and tune was enjoyable as well as Sooyoung's and Tiffany's alluring English throughout the 25 seconds. I also have to take note in Sunny's hat reading the words "Welcome Motherf☆ckers" in large letters as well as Hyoyeon and Yuri's new, however shockingly (as we all know and can't deny the "accidents"that occurred to Sunny the past few months) cool hairstyles.
To conclude, this comeback is simply a disappointment and in my opinion, not something to continue anticipate. SM Entertainment already showed with the video “Dancing Queen”, that this will be nothing but half-assing (which is nothing new, considering we’re talking about SM Entertainment) and as we all are well aware of, the singing in the majority of the album will be below expectations as well as the originality of the music they are singing to. However, on the positive side, the girls look great in the teaser for the album and seem to be moving farther and farther with every comeback, Korean and Japan alike, from the “Girls Generation” title with edginess and sexiness to satisfy.
I REALLY hope you're just trolling about the new album being all cover songs.
ReplyDeleteThat's what sources say. I hope they're trolling me. If they aren't, be ready for a sucky comeback.
DeleteWould you consider your sources to be reliable?
ReplyDeleteI would consider them worthy. As I implied in the previous comment, I do have doubts about it.
DeleteHopefully they're wrong. Plus, I was under the impression that this song wasn't their comeback song, and that it isn't even going to be on the new album.
ReplyDeleteVery true.
DeleteAlso, I should have noted that the teaser sounds different and new, nothing that I have heard of before.
According to my sources, the comeback will be like nothing that they've ever done before. He says that it'll have "gangsta rap lyrics."
ReplyDeleteGangsta rap...? I don't like this image for Girls' Generation one bit. However, your source seems more reasonable, being that the teaser for the album had that "gangsta rap" sound.
DeleteWell I hope you've accepted how wrong you are now that the comeback has actually begun.
ReplyDeleteThis article was made of assumptions because it was before their official comeback. How about checking out the official review for the music video?
