Song Suggestion Saturdays - 3 Songs That Will Put Some Pep in Your Step
1. f(x) - Step
f(x)'s album Pink Tape has a plethora of songs that are really good and Step is one of those songs that stands out among the others. Step is energetic, catchy, and all around fun to listen to. Part of me wishes there could be a music video to go along with it but at the same time, it's hard to imagine there being anything they could do to make a good enough video to go along with the song. It isn't necessarily a good song do dance to but it's still a good listen.
2. Afterschool - Let's Step Up
This one is less of a song and more of a performance. Let's Step Up is a unique video featuring tap dancing as the main method of performance. If I had the stamina to do so, I would definitely try to learn this dance Kahi opens up the dance with her solo is absolutely breathtaking and you don't see tap dancing often in Kpop. Hopefully one day, we'll get to see more videos like this in the future.
3. KARA - Step
Step is one of KARA's more popular songs that I really recommend you listen to if you haven't heard of it before. Step's heavy electronic sound and upbeat tone is a surefire way of brightening your day and giving you something to dance to. There's also an unnecessary amount of versions for the music video like a regular version, a close up version, and a white version (?!). There's probably even more but there really is no point in seeking them all out, just find one and watch it is what I say.
Song Suggestion Sundays - Memorable OSTs
Last week must have had been a highly anticipated week for all k-drama lovers out there - Heirs and Medical Top Team have finally premiered! To coincide with the aforementioned k-drama premiers, I'll be sharing some of the more memorable OSTs that I have heard from k-dramas all around for this edition of SSS. While it is truly the beautifully sculpted faces of the lead actors/actresses that resonates in the hearts of us humans for a rather long period of time, I believe that there is much worth in the OSTs of dramas as well. Because these songs are written to portray certain specific themes in their accompanying dramas such as nostalgia, falling in love etc, they are often times of high emotional and musical worth. Here are some OSTs that personally struck a chord with me!
I Choose to Love You - Hyorin (Sistar) from How To Love Smart
In Your Eyes - Onew (SHINee) from To The Beautiful You
Goodbye My Princes - Monday Kiz from Princess Prosecutor
I Still Love You - Suzy (Miss A) from Big
Love is Like A Snowflake - Junsu (JYJ) from Nice Guy
Of course, beyond all aforementioned examples, there are many more well-known OSTs that are equally great songs. By Taeyeon the OST Queen, there's If (Hong Gil Dong), Can You Hear Me (Beethoven Virus), I Love You (Athena), Missing You Like Crazy (The King 2 Hearts), And One (That Winter, The Wind Blows) and Closer (To The Beautiful You). By SHINee there's Stand By Me (Boys over Flowers), Fly High (Princess Prosecutor) and Green Rain (The Queen's Classroom).
Yup, and that's all for my takes on OSTs. I haven't really been keeping up with the OSTs from recent dramas, hence the lack of them. What are your favourite OSTs?
Song Suggestion Saturday: Recent Songs that Don't Suck
1. Bangtan Boys - Born Singer
I'm going to be a hundred percent honest, I am a fan of this group. Got a problem? Deal with it. But besides their other promtional songs like No More Dream, We Are Bulletproof and O! R.U.L8.2, there are other songs by them that I'm addicted to that didn't come with a formal music video since well... it was a cover of J.Cole's Born Sinner (hint: name difference). It's phenomenal and really, I just can't stop listening to this utter piece of perfection so really, if you have like 2 seconds to spend, please check this out. You won't regret it.
2. Girls' Day - Female President
I remember reviewing this song and having a more harsh tone (I liked it at the time but not that much), however, after giving it the benefit of the doubt and listening to it five times, I was already allured by Minah and Sojin's strong vocals, Yura's weak as hell but appropriate rap and exposed bottom and Hyeri's... ever-changing wardrobe in the dance version. How can you not like the 'ddara, ddara, da, da, da, ddara～' part? It's catchy. It's fitting. It's what made me like Girls' Day a whole lot more.
3. 2NE1 - Do You Love Me?
I'm going to be honest here--this song was good. It's almost as if people are finding any little thing to get at 2NE1 at, their comeback song a part of it. There are constant complaints of the track's blandness or unoriginality in their songs however, I really can't stop replaying Do You Love Me? Park Bom's weakening vocals were not so emphasized in the track and was actually somewhat fitting in the song and Dara's whatever the fuck she tried--can't tell if singing, rapping or just blatantly speaking--was something I got used to after few listens. It's fun, it's catchy and the music video was amazing. Definitely recommend this if you party hardy.
4. Brown Eyed Girls - Kill Bill
The. Whistling. Was. Addiction. I can't right now. I just... I just can't. The song is pretty good--its simplicity working to its overall benefit. Not much else to say about it... just listen! Also, I recommend other Brown Eyed Girl tracks from their Black Box album and simply just any album.
5. EXO - Growl
With every mention of EXO, you don't have to scream "SASAENG!" like bloody murder and get into a war. We're just talking about the track--that is all. I like Growl and it has been on repeat ever since I could remember and I probably know all the lines to the Korean and Chinese version backwards and forwards. It's good chizz. Listen to it, for me? Thank you.
Lastly, there's a few honorable mentions that didn't make the cut so I'll list 'em out for your little ears to jam to.
1. SPICA - Tonight
They're too underrated. Listen to the song. I would've gave them a whole summary if I wasn't just... well, lazy.
2. 2PM - ADTOY
SHAKE DAT BOOTY, NICKHUN. SHAKE IT. TWERK TWERK LIKE CAILLOU (cool people'll get my reference)
3. Girls' Generation - Galaxy Supernova
It's Japanese so I couldn't list it. And to me, I'm not like DYING or KILLING MY UTERUS to listen, ya know? It's good.
4. Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop
"Wait, what is that doing her--" LISTEN TO IT. I AM ADDICTED. YOU KNOW IT.
5. Ladies' Code - Pretty Pretty
If you REALLY got nothin' to do, listen. It's okay.
Song Suggestion Saturday - Week 3 - Superb Singing Stages - 2NE1 vs SNSD
Not your typical Song Suggestion Saturday, I compiled a group of my favorite stages from the MNET television show, The Voice, both being covers of popular songs by Korean Pop groups and both demonstrating great vocals (even greater than the original's) in the simple minutes that they have. The first one is a sing-off done by Jang Eun Ah and Lee Yoon Kyung of season 1, covering Girls' Generation's Hoot in under 3 minutes, this has got to be my favorite covers of the song.
Next is the already-debuted artist Son Seung Yeon as she sang her version of Go Away by 2NE1. Why all the judges didn't turn around in time? I don't know, but she gets better as the song starts to pick up.
Song Suggestion Saturday - Week 3 - TWERK TEAM
Fuck it, the title doesn't start with 'S' but who gives? Anyway, in honor of Wassup's debut, I found a remix of Girls' Generation's I Got a Boy to a twerk song... and despite my prior 'this is probably going to be shit' feelings, I actually found myself bopping to it... six times. Now, would I twerk to it? No, but I would definitely recommend it for anyone who actually had the time to listen to Wassup's debut song Wassup before it was blocked because it drains out the blegh of it.
In (the other) honor of commenter SD who introduced me to this glorious dance cover that I have literally watched around ten times and wanted to learn the dance to however, realized I would look like a squid, is a dance hall cover. Well, it's not actually a song that I'm suggesting and actually a video... but as I said before--who gives? Watch it and tell me what you think of Wassup now cause they are fucktastic and don't deserve even half of the shitstorm they're getting right now.
Song Suggestion Saturday - Week 2 - Seventy Second Stages
Whether it's live or it's a studio version, TaeTiSeo still proves to be on the top with vocals, anywhere and everywhere. To be honest, upon listening to this Pixie Lott cover, I was shocked that this was actually live--listening to Taeyeon and Seohyun nailing their parts and even Tiffany deserving credit.
Though the whole video is not exactly seventy seconds video time, if you minus the random woman on the DJ booth, it comes out to about the time. The infamous SHINee special stage during KBS's Gayo Daejun has got to be one of my all-time favorites. Equipped with their undeniable Engrish and Key's fantastic-ness, SHINee performed amazingly in those odd, shiny outfits.
Song Suggestion Saturday - Week 1 - Slow & Simple
Whether you're a fan of boy groups or not, this song is definitely addicting. What I like about it most is that it's not one of the common love or heartbreak songs and instead, digs into the roots of the group Bangtan Boys with the song meaning... some of the members even rewriting the lyrics themselves. All in all, great track and I definitely suggest giving it at least one listen (unless you're a priss and are scared of cuss words).
Next on the list is Girls' Generation's Taeyeon's OST BYE for movie, Mr. Go. The sweet sound of Taeyeon's vocals accompanied by the slowness of the backtrack simply just caresses and completes the song... in fact, this OST actually makes me want to watch the movie! If you're a fan of ballads or just a fan of Taeyeon, BYE is most definitely the song for you.
